FAQs
What Is a DOT Physical Exam?
DOT physical exams ensure that commercial motor vehicle drivers can drive safely. Operating a large vehicle like a bus or semi requires a certain level of health to ensure safety for the driver and other motorists. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) requires commercial drivers to undergo a DOT exam to obtain a commercial driver’s license and continue driving commercially.
During a DOT exam, a certified provider assesses a driver’s health history and current health status and performs a detailed physical examination. Successful candidates receive a medical certificate that allows them to drive a commercial vehicle for up to two years. Annual testing is required for certain health conditions, including high blood pressure, heart disease, and diabetes. Appropriate documentation must be provided by patients to complete this physical – please remember to bring this with you.
What Does a DOT Physical Consist Of?
In a DOT physical exam, your provider will discuss your medical history. You can expect questions about past surgeries, chronic health conditions, family medical history, and current medications.
Your provider will also collect vital signs (including blood pressure and heart rate) and conduct a comprehensive physical examination. You will also have vision and hearing tests as part of the certification requirements. You can also expect a urine test, which allows your provider to screen for various health conditions.
Depending on health status or medical history, some drivers may require additional cardiac testing or other screening tests, which should be provided by your primary care provider and/or specialist.
What Are the New DOT Physical Requirements?
You should be aware of several new DOT physical requirements.
Vision: Commercial drivers must have a visual acuity of at least 20/40 in each eye, with or without corrective lenses. They must also pass a peripheral vision test. Drivers who do not meet visual acuity or peripheral vision requirements in one eye may still be able to obtain certification. The ability to distinguish between green, red, and yellow traffic signals is also required.
Hearing: Drivers must be able to hear a forced whisper from a distance of at least five feet. If they need a hearing aid to meet this requirement, it must be worn whenever driving a commercial vehicle.
Blood Pressure: Drivers with a blood pressure of less than 140/90 and no prior diagnosis of high blood pressure (hypertension) can be certified for two years. Those with high blood pressure who are receiving treatment must undergo annual certification. For newly diagnosed hypertension, FMCSA guidelines for recertification vary and depend on the stage of hypertension.
