Spring into Wellness: Ways to Prepare for the Season

With the winter season in the rearview mirror, it’s time to put single digit temperatures and snow squalls behind us and spring forward into a new season. Check out these wellness tips to help get you and your family prepared for those glorious, sunshiny days ahead!

Sign up for a local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture)

The benefits to joining a CSA are many, including access to local, seasonal food directly from a farmer. You can think of CSAs as the original food subscription service that Blue Apron or HelloFresh are known for today: consumers purchase a share (aka a membership or subscription) and in exchange receive a box that can contain seasonal produce, meat, eggs and cheese each week throughout the season. Depending on your local farm, you may receive a standardized box or be able to shop through the farm store and fill your box at your own discretion. Joining a CSA not only gives you access to fresh, locally sourced food, but it also provides you the opportunity to try new food items and incorporate them into your recipes and diet!

Spring Clean Your Workspace

‘Tis the season for spring cleaning! The first place many start this task is within their homes and vehicles, but oftentimes people overlook cleaning another critical location: their workspace. Having a clean, organized workspace is beneficial for many reasons, including preventing the spread of germs or illness and reducing stress and anxiety. Spray surfaces such as your keyboard, phone, mouse and desk with disinfectant spray (it’s best to do this often – once a week or even once a day, not just in the spring) and dust them as well. Getting organized and decluttering your work space can help reduce stress and anxiety by giving you piece of mind: you don’t have to panic when asked where an important paper is – it’s filed away in a labeled folder.

Protect Your Skin

The sun on your face and skin can be a welcome respite after months of cold, harsh temperatures. It may sound repetitive, but the use of sunscreen is imperative, no matter what the season. Spring time in New England also signals the return of many small bugs such as ticks, bees, horse flies, and mosquitoes to name a few. Wearing bug or tick spray and longer sleeved pants or shirts can help prevent bites and stings. If you do happen to get bit or stung, the first thing to do is remove the stinger if there is one and wash the affected area with mild soap and water. If you happen to have trouble breathing, swelling, dizziness, hives, or nausea you should seek emergency care immediately.

After months of snow, ice, and darkness – thoughts of strolling through the local farmers market and dipping your toes in the water are sure to bring excitement to New Englanders of all ages.
